BLUF: Understanding when and how to bug out from an approaching threat now, will prepare you for when it’s time to take action.
Think of your neighborhood or place of business tactically and consider multiple avenues of egress. There are occasions where your neighborhood roads or your usual parking deck, may be undrivable or unsafe. Knowing the surrounding area is a must.
📄When Would You Need to Bug Out Quickly?
》Rolling wildfire.
》Home invasion.
》Life Altering Event (SHTF) Bugout, invasion, nuclear attack, etc.
》Flood.
》Pandemic, upcoming forced quarantine detention by military.
》Evacuation notice for nearby nuclear plant’s meltdown.
》Group of marauders, rioters.
📄What to Do?
》Have egress routes planned. Take note of trails, firebreaks, sewer tunnels, alleyways, etc.
》Take note of locations of bodies of water, underground gas lines, bridges, thick underbrush, etc.
》Have a survival cache nearby.
》Have a safe house in the area, such as a trusted neighbor.
》Know where main highways are.
》Know compass directions of points of interest.
》Have rally points planned and known by members of your group.
》Carry your bugout bag with you, store it in an easy to access place so it can quickly be grabbed during egress.
》Make a plan of action (such as ICERS) and share it with members of your group.
📄What Do I Need to Know to Better Prepare?
》It’s more about when not how. Anticipate the need for an egress. Stay aware of current events, listen to an NOAA weather radio, follow the news, read the body language and actions of the public. This will allow you to bug out before a state/local order is given and before civil unrest.
》If you bug out in advance of mass hysteria or at its earliest stages, a Bugout Vehicle (BOV) is your best option. Don’t rely on public transportation. That takes control of the situation out of your hands.
》Have a Bugout Location (BOL) pre-mapped. Share the location with your trusted inner circle and follow your “In-Case-of-Emergency Response System” (ICERS) plan. Survival caches and rally points along your route could be useful to regroup and resupply.
》If you bug out after a Life Altering Event (LAE), backroads and traveling by foot may be your best option. Avoid densely populated areas, carry self-defense, blend in as a gray man. When you are out of the city, look for alternative transportation such as a staged bicycle at a rally point, or in SHTF, an abandoned vehicle.
》Once you’ve arrived at your BOL, establish comms, follow your ICERS plan, secure your location with perimeter defense and early warning systems, use radio to stay informed, self sustain, rebuild, and thrive.
