If an intruder broke into your house and you fired a round at him as he entered the living room where you were seated, could an errant round miss him and hit a family member asleep in a back bedroom?
Know what’s beyond your target when you pull a trigger. If someone breaks into your home, plan how and where you’ll likely first engage the threat so you already know what victims may be beyond the threat. Know the likely entry points. Know where you’ll approach from and where you’ll retrieve your gun from, and where your family may be at night.
Fully stocked refrigerators, a book shelf with books, a cast iron tub, tiled shower, or a dresser will likely effect a bullets velocity and increase tumble lessening the chance that the bullet will then go through an exterior or interior wall. These items won’t always stop a bullet! They just increase the chance that you won’t harm someone beyond a wall behind them.
Nothing is 100%. I’ve seen a bullet go through a vehicle windshield and only make a minimal dent in the plastic console of the car. I’ve also seen a bullet go through a windshield and through two seats and exit the trunk.
Stop the threat in self defense but be aware of what’s beyond your target. Secure doors/windows IOT deny or at least delay entry so you’ll have time to react. Situate living spaces out of the line of anticipated fire or position furniture in a manner that would shield other victims.
- Always treat all firearms as if they were loaded.
- Never allow the muzzle of any firearm to point at anything you are not willing to destroy.
- 3Never put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire.
- Always be sure of your target, and what is behind and in front of it.
When you’re at home, it can’t be expected that you’re carrying a firearm but you should always know where the closest one is.
