Below are three examples of firearm malfunctions and how to deal with them in the moment.
Firearm Malfunction: Failure to Eject
BLUF: If you pull the trigger all the way with no resistance and there is no click (dead trigger, no discharge), move to cover and perform SPORTS or appropriate procedure for your firearm (Slap, Pull, Observe, Release, Tap, Squeeze).
》Index your finger off the trigger, keep weapon trained on target, move to cover, observe for a round exposed and stuck in slide.
》With your support hand, “Tap” or “Slap” (hard slam) the base of the magazine to ensure it is firmly seated.
》With your primary hand, tilt the ejection port downward and with your support hand “Pull” by grasping the charging handle or back of slide back and hold or lock it to the rear.
》”Observe” for a stovepipe. If the brass was high and the chamber is clear, it’s likely already fallen out and you can “Release” the slide/handle, (“Tap” the forward assist appropriate for your firearm make), and “Squeeze” the trigger after you have regained a sight picture and reassessed.
Firearm Malfunction: Failure to Eject (Double Feed)
BLUF: If you pull the trigger all the way with no resistance and there is no click (dead trigger, no discharge), move to cover and perform SPORTS (Slap, Pull, Observe, Release, Tap, Squeeze) or appropriate procedure for your firearm.
》Index your finger off the trigger, keep weapon trained on target, move to cover, observe for a round stuck in chamber with a 2nd round nosing up from mag. (If you do not see this, proceed with Type 2 clearance we’ve previously covered.)
》With primary hand, tilt the ejection port downward and with support hand “Pull” by grasping charging handle/slide back & hold/lock it to the rear.
》”Observe” for double feed. If the brass is low & the round is still in the chamber, drop the magazine (forcefully) & “Release” the slide. Be sure to retain the mag if you don’t have a spare.
》Rack slide 3 times. Reload mag w/ support hand. (“Tap” forward assist if appropriate.)
》Regain sight picture, reassess, “Squeeze” trigger if threat exists.
Firearm Malfunction: Improper Detonation (Squib Round)
BLUF: If you pull the trigger all the way and hear a pop instead of a bang, you feel a weak recoil, and the slide doesn’t operate properly; discard firearm and retrieve backup or escape.
》Index your finger off the trigger, keep weapon trained on target, move to cover, assess. If you’re observing anything other than a clear chamber with no apparent damage, you need to discard your firearm and have it serviced at a later time.
》Retrieve a secondary firearm or alternate weapon if appropriate for threat.
》If an appropriate secondary weapon is not available, egress from the fight.
