Residential Security Routine
BLUF: Conduct daily and event-based security precautions as part of a routine to avoid a larceny or home intrusion.
General Security Precautions
Keep your house locked, even during the day if feasible.
Make your house appear occupied: Keep lawns cared for, keep mail picked up (if leaving town, make arrangements for mail), park vehicles in a visible area (not in garage), keep some lights on at night.
Perform a nightly “9pm Routine” or security check following the below checklist.
Report suspicious activity. Note unfamiliar vehicles making multiple passes or packed onto the roadside.
Follow or join local law enforcement social media pages and alert programs as well as community groups that share crime trends in your area.
9PM Routine
》Lock all doors.
》Close and lock windows.
》Lock vehicles.
》Close garages.
》Secure out-buildings and exterior valuables (bicycles, lawn mower, etc).
》Turn on exterior lights.
》Activate alarms, motion lights, & cameras.
》Secure fence gates.
》Remove valuables from vehicles (firearm, iPad, loose change) and stowaway garage door openers.
How to PIT a Vehicle
BLUF: A Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) is a maneuver that may temporarily immobilize a vehicle allowing you to egress and engage.
》Begin to overtake target vehicle until your front bumper is online with their rear tire well. Match target’s speed.
》Turn into the target’s rear and maintain speed or accelerate as needed to match target’s speed until target loses traction. You are not making a 90° turn, it’s more comparative to a commitment lane change.
》After contact, push through target and accelerate away from the direction of their spin.
If the safety of the target vehicle is of concern, do not PIT at speeds greater than 45 mph (sedan) or 35 mph (SUV/truck). A successful PIT will only momentarily disable for seconds.
