On this episode of SDN, our panel discusses being gas station ready. You should always be in Condition Yellow when filling up regardless of where you are. Gas stations are a top five location to be accosted and caution should always be exercised.

BASICS
- Top 5 location to be accosted
- Trust your gut, don’t stop at a gas station if you get a bad feeling, go to the next gas station that doesn’t trip your danger radar
- Always be in Condition Yellow and ready to go to Condition Red
- When pumping gas …
- Pick a pump close to the front door or visible from the front door, avoid pumps that are on the fringes
- Check for a card skimmer
- Don’t stand between your car and pump (plus open car door) which will trap you
- While the vehicle is being fueled, move away from the gas nozzle to allow for a wider field of view and to allow for an avenue of escape. Standing at the front or rear bumper is a better position than standing at the gas cap.
- Lock your car doors while filling up so no one can get in the passenger door
- Don’t use your weapon of mass distraction
- Observe your surroundings and continuously scan for bad guys, escape routes etc
- Lock your car doors immediately upon re-entering the vehicle
IF APPROACHED BY SOMEBODY
- Maintain eye contact
- Watch their hands and waist to track their intentions
- Keep your head on a swivel, rule of PLUS ONE
- Run back to safety (convenience store) if necessary
- Lock car doors the second you get in it
