Smartphones can be utilized for Prepping, Intel, Comms, and Digital Tools.
Offline Use
Make folders on your phone that have categorized apps. For example, a comms folder should have messaging, video, and calling apps. For our bugout location we made an “offgrid” folder for apps such as:
– the controller for gas generator & fridge
– signal strength finder to adjust our antennas
– distance measuring tools
– solar calculator
– map cache tracker, etc.
Do some research into which apps can function offline. The biggest point people overlook is that a phone’s functionality is largely offline capable. From FM scanner radios to preloaded maps to 50,000+ reference books, your phone is a great tool even when cellular and data are non-existent.
Online Use
During localized emergencies a phone can relay info to your family using PTT radio apps, navigate to a rally point, get federal alerts or weather updates, and more. However, your phone’s abilities are not limited just because SHTF and internet/cell-coverage is out. Your phone can still be used for:
– downloaded maps
– built-in flashlight
– access pre-saved survival textbooks/guides
– start a fire with the battery
– improvise a compass using magnet and wire from phone components
– use camera as binos or range/distance finder
– signal using reflective screen
– make a fishing lure, etc.
