Description

It’s been 73 days since it happened. Our food storage held out longer than we expected, but now we are mixing cans of cranberry sauce with things like pickled Herring. I knew better than to buy that stuff, but it was on sale. Anyhow, the kids won’t eat it, and I’m worried they will starve.

I guess appetite fatigue is a real thing. I don’t blame them, that’s on me.

I don’t have the energy to go hunting again today, but I have to do something. It seems like all the big food knows that we are in hunting season, haven’t seen a deer in weeks. Hell, I haven’t even heard a dog bark in weeks come to think of it. I guess that’s where we are now.

I was thinking there must be something out there we can eat. Grandpa used to tell stories of the railroad crews adding plants to their food when they were out for months laying rails. They called it track salad. I can’t remember, was it called kudzu? I think Grandpa said they even made their own headache medicine, from willow trees maybe.

I’m going to see about getting into that old library across town today. Maybe I can find a book that tells me what we can eat from the forest. Otherwise, I have no clue what to do anymore. I guess we could eat bugs. I’ll look for a book on that too, I guess.

I’ll try to keep this journal going this time.
