The mental side of combat is vast and powerful, quite literally determining your next move. Your mind can be your greatest ally or your most formidable opponent. Your thoughts have the power to propel you forward or trap you in a state of psychophysical paralysis – fear.
The Hidden Enemy
Psychological fear often leads to doubt and hesitation. If left unchecked, it can spiral into anxiety and panic, creating what I call the “Inertia State,” where your body becomes unable to move. This state of paralysis is born from a ‘Victim’s vocabulary’: What if I lose? What if it hurts? What if I fail?
To perform at your peak, these thoughts must be eliminated. Your internal dialogue—your ‘self-talk’—must be positive, assertive, and motivating. Your inner coach should push you to greater heights, help you surpass preconceived limitations, and boldly face the challenges ahead.
More Than Fight or Flight
For most of modern history, fear has been simplified as the “fight or flight” syndrome. But this definition falls short once the physical confrontation begins. While the adrenaline surge from your survival instincts plays a role, it’s your mind that ultimately decides your next move.
Psychological fear, on the other hand, is an emotional state that can be controlled and harnessed to drive action. Unfortunately, without proper understanding and training, fear often creates emotional inertia—the inability to act—by visualizing failure and pain. Understanding this process is crucial to conquering fear.
Fear Does Not Prevent Death, It Prevents Life
Fear manifests in many ways. The secret is learning how to manage it, to “know” fear, and use it as a pre-contact cue, a guide, or even fuel for your actions. While there are good fears that protect you, there are also bad fears that can debilitate you. Managing these fears is, in my view, one of the most important skills we can develop as humans.
Your ability to recognize when fear is manipulating you is vital to your self-actualization in all confrontations—both internal and external. Remember, self-awareness is also self-defense.
The F.U.C.K. Fear Formula
Learn to manage fear by following these simple steps, summarized in an easy-to-remember acronym:
- Face fear (accept it)
- Understand fear (study/train)
- Control fear (use it)
- Know fear (understand its role)
