Brief

Assets in urban environments enhance the tracking of a “target.” Consider traces that can be revealed through the access of surveillance cameras, speaking to witnesses, or analyzing a discarded train ticket. This array of data not only reveals where someone has been but where they may be in the future.

Consumer Tracking

Discarded receipts/tickets left on a table or tossed in the trash can tell where someone has been or where they may frequent. The direction of discharge can show us if they are left/right handed. Consider a customer “rewards punch card” stored on the counter at a cafe or a credit card bill to see where the target travels. Testing a target’s phone number at a store to see if they have a rewards account lets you know they frequent the business.

Litter Tracking

A forgotten jacket in a lobby, phone charger left in an airport outlet, spit/gum, blood, cigarette butt, or any other material the target drops of otherwise leaves along their travel path can allow for you to track their direction of travel, garner their DNA or fingerprints, or determine from which terminal (destination) they were flying.

Concrete Analysis

Study tire tracks and markings to determine the direction of the target’s travel or vehicle fluid leakage (AC use, oil) to determine how long they were idle at a stop. Look for ground transfer or imprints such as dirt tracked onto a hardball road or tracks in fresh dew in the morning.

Equipment Exploitation

Access relevant surveillance video cameras. The use of cover story may convince the camera manager to allow you to review them, (i.e. I left my phone on top of my car, can I watch your footage to see where it fell off in your parking lot?”). Consider the use of GPS trackers covertly placed on a vehicle or even a toll booth “EZ Pass” left in a stolen vehicle.

Passive Historiology

Analyze vehicles or even hats/briefcases/jackets for signs of where they have been. Rain, pollen, pine sap, acorns, saw dust, mud, etc. can tell you where the vehicle has been or is normally parked.

Transit Tracking

A conversation with a taxi driver could leave an imprint in the driver’s memory, allowing a tracker to gain insight about your appearance, pick-up location, etc. Using the same bus stop or sub-station has a similar imprint vulnerability as well as the increased chance of video surveillance capturing the target.
