Who’s Coaching You in the Game of Life?

I’ve told this story before, but I want you to read it again because this time, it might hit differently.

I was 15 years old, standing at the top of a ski hill minutes away from a race that felt like the most important thing in the world. My coach asked me, “How do you feel, kid?”

I lied. “Great, coach.”

But inside, I was scared out of my mind. That fear made me tight, made me hesitate. I wiped out, hard.

The truth is, that coach wasn’t really a coach—he was just a trainer. There’s a big difference.

A real coach understands fear. They understand psychology, the invisible stuff that messes with your head and your body. My coach didn’t, and it cost me.

And here’s the thing: life is one big Game Day. Every single day. It’s not just on the slopes, in a ring, or during a mission where fear and stress show up—they hit us at work, at home with our families, when we’re chasing personal goals. They show up in the moments that matter the most.

So, the question is:

Who’s coaching you when it counts?

Who’s coaching your family? Your team?

Here’s what I’ve learned: you are your own first responder.

And in the fights that really matter—whether it’s managing your own growth, handling stress, or leading your family—you need to be prepared. And the truth is, most of us don’t have a life coach, a mindset coach, or a mentor available 24/7.

That’s why you need to learn how to coach yourself. Your self-talk, that voice in your head, that inner dialogue—that’s your coach. And if it’s off, it can derail your decisions, your actions, your entire day.

And how do I know all this? Because I’ve been living with and managing fear since I was a little boy. That 15-year-old kid is now 65, and I coach people all over the world just like you. I teach them how to fight predators and, more importantly, how to fight self-doubt.

The author and athlete Dan Millman once wrote, “When you face just one opponent and you doubt yourself, you’re outnumbered.”

It isn’t just about managing fear—it’s about transforming fear into fuel. When you face it head-on, it becomes the thing that drives you forward, helps you lead, grow, and make better decisions in every part of your life.

Those who manage their fear, manage the fight.
