Who Takes Down America’s Power Grid?

Who Takes Down America's Power Grid?

The Pentagon is pulling every major base off the civilian grid because it expects somebody to take it down. CISA, NSA and the FBI confirmed in writing that Chinese state hackers hold logins inside U.S. power, water and communications networks, placed for a war.

They’re already in. In Massachusetts they sat inside a two-town utility for 300 days. In Germany one man with homemade rockets shorted lines in three states. A rifle did it in North Carolina.

The attackers come in three sizes. The state actor holds a real employee password at your utility and waits for Beijing to need it. The saboteur cuts the fence or fires a rocket over the lines. The thief drains transformer oil for cash. All three hit the substation on your feeder.

Big power companies must wall off the computers that run the grid. Town utilities mostly fall outside those rules. That is where the Chinese crew was found. Picture the login screen at a 15,000-customer utility with a valid password typed from Beijing. Whether it gets used depends on a war not yet started.

The risk for your family is a house fed by a small-town utility that falls outside the federal grid rules, where the men who want it dark already hold a login.

This week: put a radio plan in your house before the towers die. Hold two weeks of cash in small bills at home. Walk your block and pick the two houses you run it with.
