Where Do We Go From Here?

by Ray DiLorenzo

It has long become apparent that Democrats no longer consider conservatives or Republicans as mere political opponents but enemies. Like their fellow Democrats before the Civil War, they have a different vision for America and appear willing to fight for that view using all means available, including violence.

The rhetoric of politicians leading up to the Civil War grew increasingly aggressive. Inevitably, those years before and after the Civil War saw a culture of violence descend on the country, confirmed with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and continuing into the 20th and 21st centuries with a series of leftist assassinations and attempts.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 divided the land west of Missouri into two territories. After much heated debate, it was decided to allow the settlers to determine whether to permit slavery, thereby repealing the Missouri Compromise, which allowed slavery in Missouri and banned it in Maine and the other Louisiana Purchase territories.

It wasn’t until 1857 that most Northern Democrats realized that their office-holders favored minority rule over the majority’s will by ignoring the will of their constituents to advance their careers. These few Democrats held the balance of power in their party and in their government while casting their votes for slavery.

The similarities to today are astounding.

Immediately after the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed, pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers poured into the territory to influence the outcome of the slavery issue in those territories.

Opponents of the Act founded the anti-slavery Republican Party. The Democrats supported slavery. Massive violence swept through the new territories from 1854 to 1861. A Missouri pro-slavery group known as the “Border Ruffians” was driven by the violent rhetoric of Democrat Senator David Rice Atchison and pro-slavery Kansas newspaper editor John Stringfellow.

The Border Ruffians seized polling places, prevented people from voting. They cast illegal ballots, falsely stating they were Kansas residents. Does this scene sound familiar? In the period known as “Bleeding Kansas,” these ruffians employed four years of raids, skirmishes, murders, and massacres throughout Kansas.

Preston Brooks (D-SC), a pro-slavery congressman, violently beat Senator Charles Sumner (R-MA) in 1856 for his anti-slavery speech. Brooks used his cane, causing severe injury. It took years for Sumner to recover, but he returned to the Senate and became a symbol of the anti-slavery movement.

There was the famous anti-slavery counter-thrust, a raid on the federal armory by the abolitionist John Brown at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, in 1859. Brown’s intention was to start a slave rebellion with arms taken from the armory. Only a few slaves joined. He was hanged for insurrection against the Commonwealth of Virginia on December 2, 1859.

Harper’s Ferry later became part of West Virginia as a result of the splitting of Virginia, slave and non-slave.

The incidents with their intense animosity between parties heightened tensions, leading South Carolina to become the first state to secede on December 20, 1860.

The Democrats today cater to a tiny minority of radical leftists who are quickly taking over the party. They refer to themselves as ‘democratic socialists,’ a more favorable label than ‘communists.’  They allowed millions of unvetted migrants to enter our country illegally to build up their party ranks despite the cost of thousands of American lives and hundreds of billions of dollars. Their promises of free stuff have hit a crescendo of late. In spite of the confusion among many ordinary Democrats and the working class having gone elsewhere, the ‘New Left’ is strengthening its resolve, particularly now after Mamdani’s victory for New York mayor.

Polarization between parties is now severe. Both parties find themselves at a crucial juncture. Can we compromise on such basic principles as what a woman is or what a man is? Are we to wink at children being mutilated by transgender surgery because the Left wants to be as God? Do we give up on traditional marriage and capitalism, the one system where everyone has a chance to succeed well beyond their dreams?

Democrats wanted the 18-year-old vote and now want the 16-year-old vote. Why wouldn’t they? They have controlled education in this country for many years and understand that to cultivate future Democrats, it is essential to start early.

John Adams said it so well. “The Constitution was made for a moral and religious people…” The Constitution relies on the ethical behavior of its people to function effectively, bringing honesty, integrity, and respect. Only a strong moral foundation would support such a government. Our foundation is rooted in moral and religious teachings.

The Democrats have broken that moral foundation and now consider the Constitution inadequate and uncomfortable. They are capable of anything, any fraud, any assassination attempt. They create chaos, crime, inflation and government shutdowns and blame it on Trump. 99% of the pollsters are stunned at the governor’s election results in New Jersey. It wasn’t heading in that direction. Something unusual happened.

If Democrat states insist on socialism/communism, they will have to either change their ways or declare war on their country. Any state that decides to go in that direction or creeps it into their system will discover themselves cut off financially from the federal government or, more likely, be visited by National Guard troops. There is precedent for this. In 1963, Gov. George Wallace refused to desegregate its public schools.  President Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard and reminded Wallace what country he was in.

Let’s be clear: The United States will never become a communist country. Communism is fundamentally incompatible with our republican system of government, capitalism, and the Judeo-Christian ethic. No American citizen would be willing to support funding any socialist experiment, particularly because the Democrat Party has demonstrated a failure to learn from history.

New York’s experiment will fail leaving millions of lives disrupted and disillusioned.

If the Democrats persist in their commitment to socialism, they will face the same fate as other parties that have embraced foreign values and lost support. We are a center-right country. The Democrats were hoping to move so far left that the center would naturally move with it. It has not happened. The Right has proven fixed. Now what?
