Weapon Defense Strategy & Psychology

Weapons are most often used as tools of intimidation.

Bad guys only want one of three things: property, body, or life

As soon as the confrontation starts, you will have a sense of why the weapon is being used.

You’ll need to adjust from there.

(It’s easy to be John Wick in a demo with a plastic weapon and cooperative role-player.

ProTip: Real-world violence never looks like that.)

You Vs GUN

When dealing with a gun, never be in front of the hole. Period. Remember that and you’ll be safer.

When you redirect and grab a gun, you want to grab the slide. (Barrel & cylinder on a revolver.)

Again, NEVER be in front of the hole.

As quickly as you can, drive the gun into the attacker and turn that hole on the bad guy.

This has a great psychological effect.

Look at Jesse’s face when I surprise her and turn the gun towards her!

PRINCIPLES

CLEAR, CONTROL, COUNTER.

CLEAR: Refers to moving your vital targets away from the trajectory of (any) weapon. This is done by moving the weapon/armed limb and is coupled with evasive tactics.

CONTROL: Refers to negating the tactical use of the attacker’s armed limb by securing it, pinning it, tying it up, etc. – gain control of the armed limb and the weapon.

COUNTER: The counterattack is best achieved when the attacker is trying to consciously or non-consciously regain control of the weapon (this is subtle and overlooked). Counters in the SPEAR System® are based on our CWCT (Closest Weapon/Closest Target model).

Watch these 3 short clips on gun disarms taught in the Tactical GARAGE GYM program.

Deciding to defend yourself, or a loved one, or act as a courageous bystander is an enormous response-ability.

I hope you never need to use any of this.

REMEMBER: NEVER PRACTICE WITH A LIVE WEAPON

While we have fun in class, we also have serious discussions on the moral, ethical, and legal aspects of self-defense.

I hope these videos made you smile but also inspired you to look into more realistic training.
