The Power of Influence

“The day you realize you can influence the behavior of everyone around you is the day your life changes forever.”

-Jay Ferruggia

The power of influence isn’t something we often consider when we go about our daily lives, but it’s a force that’s constantly at work.

The people around you are looking. They may not even realize it, but they are. And if they depend on us for food, shelter, protection, guidance, and money (you get the point), then how we act and behave will be judged—even if it’s unconscious.

Your family, friends, colleagues, and clients all watch how we manage stress and success. They observe how we handle the roller-coaster ride of life, and they notice how we approach our fitness and nutrition. These choices don’t just impact us. They send a message to our immediate family, to our team, to our community—pretty much anyone we come in contact with.

I think I was 10 years old, sitting in the passenger seat running errands with my mom. It was a super hot and humid day in Montreal, and I saw a guy walking—something about him stood out; he had an aura about him. As we got closer, I noticed he was shirtless and ripped. He looked and walked like an athlete and exuded so much confidence.

I didn’t say anything to my mom. But I did say to myself, “I am going to look like that one day.”

I didn’t know this teenager. Never saw him before or after, but he influenced me. That moment over 60 years ago, inspired my lifelong relationship with fitness and strength.

The power of influence is that huge…

But it can’t be the reason you do things. It needs to be authentic…

The discipline needed to be disciplined has to come from within—it has to be self-driven.

At some point in our journey, we realize that our behavior is and can be contagious to those around us. Just like our maxim: “Fear is contagious, but so is courage.” Discipline is contagious, and in there lies the power of influence.

Daily habits are contagious.

But you cannot expect people to follow suit just because you’re doing it. In time, those who are ready will notice the integrity of your process—that’s what creates the osmosis effect.

Lead yourself, and you will lead others.

We live in an influencer era where the facade is what’s being sold—filters and genetics are used to help sell the destination. Very few ‘influencers’ are truly honest about what it takes to get to the top.

I caution you, this isn’t about trying to influence others. It’s about living with the kind of integrity and consistency that naturally makes an impact.

When you lead yourself, you lead others—not through loud declarations or flashy actions, but through the quiet power of your own disciplined life.

Jay Ferruggia, who inspired today’s letter, exemplifies the power of influence—not just through his words, but through the way he shows up with consistency and integrity each day.

Build your habits.
Then build on your habits.

Focus on your journey, and let your actions speak for themselves. That’s where real influence is born and grows.
