At 12:45 a.m. in Gloucestershire a local call flagged three vans that appeared to be heading toward RAF Fairford. Armed officers stopped five men in the village of Whelford, two miles short of the fence, first under the Explosives Act, then on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act. Army bomb techs and a robot went into the vans, a 400-meter cordon went up, and 85 homes emptied before breakfast.
Fairford is not a British training field. It is the pad U.S. B-1s used this year to hit Iranian missile sites after Tehran went after shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
