Surviving an IED; Tap Code

Surviving an IED

“mouth-open, thumbs in ears, hands on eyes” (MO-TE-HE)

BLUF: Increase survivability and decrease the effects of an explosion occurring in close proximity by taking a few reactionary measures such as egressing, finding cover, MO-TE-HE, and assuming a safe position.

》Focus on vehicles (VBIED) or persons (PBIED) that may be carrying an IED. Egress from them while watching for their movements/actions.

》Take cover behind a metal or stone structure or inside a building on the ground floor. If you are in a vehicle where an IED is detected, speed up past the threat or stop short and reverse.

》Safe distance for an IED/PBIED is 100ft behind cover or 1,300ft when there is none. Safe distance for a VBIED is 800ft behind cover or 2,700ft when there is none.

》Stay low, look for natural depression in the ground (ditch) or find a step-down.

》 Defend from the concussive effect and falling debris from a collapsed structure or tertiary shrapnel. Face away from the IED, cover ears and eyes while keeping your mouth open by placing your thumbs in your ear holes and your hands over your eye sockets. Use “mouth-open, thumbs in ears, hands on eyes” (MO-TE-HE) to equalize pressure.

》Shield intestines/organs and head. Lay on your back in a fetal-like position where your knees are tucked to your stomach and your arms/elbows are shielding your chest/head.

Tap Code

BLUF: Communicate covertly with a series of taps using an alphabetic code that requires no memorization.

Use when distance, circumstances, or barriers prevent verbal conversation. With a series of knocks you can signal individual letters to create words. Tap Code is useful because a written reference card can quickly be drawn to use while signaling or decoding.

》Reference Card- Draw a table grid of 5 rows and 5 columns. Start at the top left and go across moving down each row in alphabetical order as such,

ABCDE
FGHIJ
LMNOP
QRSTU
VWXYZ

*Note the C and K are interchangeable.

》Operation: To mark a letter the first 1-5 taps going down determine which row you’re referencing. The next 1-5 taps go across and select the individual letter.

Example: 3 Taps, pause, then 5 Taps would be a “P”.
