Facing a Murderer: Are Your Skills Enough?

Ever wondered if sparring and fighting someone trying to kill you is different? Spoiler: it is.

You might think I’m being dramatic, but you’d be shocked at how many people confess that the first time they faced real violence, their fancy techniques vanished.

Why? Because most martial arts, self-defense classes, and even law enforcement training are still too stylized and cooperative.

We practice self-defense against like-minded Good Samaritans… like ourselves. We spar with control, choreographing picture-perfect self-defense scenarios.

But let’s be real: sparring and fighting are nothing like facing someone who wants to kill you.

A police officer once asked me, “As a close combat expert, do you think a cop would have an advantage against a murderous man?”

A murderous man… Let that sink in.

It’s a great question, revealing a deep truth: traditional training, including “shoot/no shoot” drills, doesn’t tackle the emotional and psychological terror of real violence. Kudos to him for seeing that.

Here’s my frustration: the internet is flooded with quick fixes – Krav Maga, BJJ, guns, knives – as if any one technique is a silver bullet.

But where’s the first place you’re hit in a violent encounter? Most people visualize the attack and then the counter.

Wrong.

The first place you’re hit is your gut – your intuition!

“Every survivor of violence who lived to tell the tale had a ‘bad feeling’ before the attack.”

  1. The mind leads the body.
  2. The first hit is always emotional.

If you have trouble managing the fear you’re going to have trouble managing the fight.

PSA: Integrate this insight into your self-defense training!

Listen to this mini-lesson on mindset and behavior – my answer is for YOU – and me – whether you’re LEO or not.

I hope this short lesson makes you safer.

Stay safe,

Coach B
