Firearm Tactics: One-Handed and Emergency Reloads

One-Handed Reload

BLUF: In the event one hand is incapacitated, the need to reload a firearm with only one hand may arise.

》Move to cover.
》Eject the magazine. (Use your knee for an inertial assist).
》Brace firearm between your knees, upside down, with the barrel pointing down and away. Alternatively, you can reholster (backward, if dominant hand is incapacitated) if appropriate and conduct reload from the holster itself.
》Retrieve spare magazine and seat it into mag well. “Tap” (hard slam) into place to ensure it is seated.
》If the slide was automatically locked to the rear upon the final fired round, press lock release to chamber a round.
》If the slide needs to be worked to chamber a round, run rear sight or edge of ejection port area of slide against belt/holster or another fixed object to cycle slide if it has closed on an empty chamber.

Note: This is a generic guide and steps may vary depending upon make/model.

Emergency Reload

BLUF: If you pull the trigger all the way with no resistance and there is no click (dead trigger, no discharge). Move, to cover if possible, assess and reload.

》Index your finger off the trigger, keep weapon trained on target. Move to cover while assessing, or move in any direction if not possible to find cover.

》If the slide is locked to the rear or quick observation shows no sign of a malfunction, you’ve likely spent all rounds and have an empty magazine.

》Keep firearm up in the high-ready & trained on target (or avenue of approach if you are behind cover).

》With primary hand, depress the magazine release while simultaneously using your support hand to retrieve a spare magazine. Let the exhausted mag fall to the ground.

》Rack the slide (or release slide if it was locked to rear).

》Regain sight picture, reassess.

Note: You shouldn’t need to take eyes off target/sights for any of these steps. Know where your mags are and which direction they’re stowed.
